Don't let misconceptions hold you back from optimizing your brain health with neurofeedback training. 💪

Myth #1: Neurofeedback is not science based.

  • This myth is one of the most common that I hear from clients which keeps them from trying neurofeedback. This is untrue in many ways. First, the mechanisms that make neurofeedback helpful are rooted in very basic/tried and true scientific principles like operant conditioning and neuroplasticity. Second, the softwares and systems that make neurofeedback possible are carefully designed using mathematical transforms and electroencephalography. Lastly, there are tons of research articles out there (https://isnr.org/isnr-comprehensive-bibliography).

Myth #2: You’re going to ZAP my brain.

  • Another common one that I hear from clients, usually masked with a giggle. Whether it’s a joke or not - of course I am not going to zap your brain. One of the things I love most about neurofeedback is that it is completely non-invasive, making it tolerable and applicable for all ages and comfort levels. The device only reads what comes OUT of the brain. Any feedback IN to the brain is delivered through auditory means.

Myth #3: I’m going to have to do neurofeedback forever to maintain the results.

  • Neurofeedback does in fact require repetition and consistently to be effective long-term. However, our brains are amazingly capable of retaining what they’ve learned. My favourite analogy is learning to ride a bike. Prior to learning, it feels foreign to us and as if we will never feel sturdy and comfortable. With practice, riding a bike becomes second nature. Without continued bike riding, we might get rusty over time. However, our brains do not lose the capacity to do so and if we got back on a bike, we’d pick it back up again. Hence the old saying.

Myth #4: Neurofeedback will change my personality.

  • I hear this one a lot coming from a place of fear. I get it, hooking something up to our brains feels scary. Trust me, I am not in the business of changing who people are. I am in the business of helping people feel like the best version of themselves. Neurofeedback does not target our personalities, our thoughts, our memories. Neurofeedback helps our brains to optimize to bring out our personalities, improve our positive self-talk, and increase our capacity for memory.

Myth #5: You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

  • It is true that our brains are more malleable when we are young, but that doesn’t mean that old dogs can’t benefit. In fact, our brains never lose their capacity for creating change and improving function. Neurofeedback is beneficial for all ages.
