Chronic Pain.
In the body, pain signals are processed initially in the spinal cord and then in the brain. When pain becomes chronic, pain signals to the brain become stuck in a perpetual loop, even when the initial cause of the pain is no longer there. When pain signals get stuck in the central nervous system, it creates chronic over-arousal and stress responses like fight, flight, or freeze. Over time, these signals can make connections with brain regions associated with anxiety, emotions, sleep, appetite and memory.
Neurofeedback helps the brain to learn how to calm or reset this signal by interrupting it repetitively. When the intensity of the signal changes, individuals report feeling more resilient, less anxious, more rested, and mentally sharp. Clients who deal with chronic pain report that overall, NeurOptimal® neurofeedback training has helped them to cope with their pain in a new way. For example, clients often report that their sleep and mood improves, and that they are able to do more activities in a day.
